Coding Background Documents
Each background document supplies information on one code set. This information is divided into a number of distinct parts and placed under subheadings for ease of reference. These subheadings can be described as follows:
Root Variable: This section indicates the variable that the code set is linked to. The root variable maybe different from the census question. For example, the root variable “Yes_No” includes all census questions for which the only expected responses were either yes or no.
Synopsis of code set construction: This section provides an explanation as to how the code set was constructed. In particular, it offers information:
1) Resources referenced when constructing the code set;
2) Factors that influenced code set construction; and,
3) Why one form of code set was chosen over other possible candidate sets.
On occasion these explanations contain discussions concerning:
1) How the census questions linked to the root variable changed overtime, and the affects these changes had on the formation of the code set;
2) The difference between the responses expected by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics and actual responses give by respondants; and,
3) Links this code set has with other code sets.
This section also indicates if the code set includes parent codes, which allow for data aggregation.
Understanding the numeric code: This section explains the mechanics of the code set. Included in this information is:
1) The size of the code in digits;
2) What each digit in the code refers to; and,
3) The general structure of the code set.
Referencing this information will allow researchers to understand how the code set works, thereby making their searches more efficient.
Code set application notes: This section provides information regarding the way in which the code set was applied, and the reasoning behind these applications. Included in this information are explanations regarding how the coders dealt with unexpected, illogical, and unintelligible responses.
